What is a Hackathons?

A hackathon is a short-term event in which individuals or teams work extensively on software or hardware projects. Participants, including students and experts, collaborate to create new applications, solutions, or products based on a given theme or challenge. These hackathons offer students a chance to showcase their skills, learn from industry experts, and potentially even win prizes or internships.

How Hackathons Work?

Hackathon organizers post a problem on a public platform once they make the announcement of the event. Also at times, organizers may ask the participants to submit their own problems. Participants can register for the event as an individual or group. If you are participating as an individual, you will be assigned to a group on the first day itself. The work is completed within the scheduled time frame. Then the groups present their project to judges who make the final decision based on innovation, implementation, and level of complexity.

How Students Can Participate in Hackathons?
  • Find Hackathons: Students can look for hackathons through university events, online platforms (e.g., Devpost, Hackathon.com), social media, or tech community groups.
  • Register:Once they find a hackathon of interest, students usually need to register in advance. Some hackathons have an application process or require a team formation beforehand.
  • Prepare: It's helpful to have a basic understanding of coding, design, or hardware skills. Many hackathons provide workshops or resources to help participants get started.
  • Form a Team: Some hackathons require team participation. Students can form teams with peers or join teams at the event.
  • Participate:During the hackathon, teams work on their projects, often with mentorship from industry professionals. They present their projects at the end of the event.
  • Network and Learn: Hackathons are also great opportunities to meet industry professionals, learn new skills, and explore career opportunities.
